In 2015, Shasi Tharoor introduces a bill seeking to decriminalize homosexuality. Shashi Thaoor is the Member of Parliament from the Thiruvananthapuram and the former Under Secretary-General of the United Nations. He used social media to raise awareness about his bill and to get people to sign petitions regarding the matter. He introduced the bill as a private bill, or one that is not backed by any political party. This bill aimed to allow adults to have consensual non-vaginal sexual intercourse, which would effectively decriminalize homosexuality. The bill was almost immediately rejected by the Parliament.
On February 2, 2016, a three judge bench of the Supreme Court heard the curative petition and refers the challenge against Section 377 to a five-judge bench to have a fresh look at things.
